To help Shandong accelerate the construction of a science and technology powerhouse, deepen international scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation, and create a global highland of scientific and technological innovation, the 2024 China-Germany Physics Conference and the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Chinese Physicists Overseas Association were held at Shandong Normal University from October 19th to 20th. The conference was jointly hosted by Shandong Normal University, the Shandong Physical Society, and the Chinese Physicists Overseas Association, and was co-sponsored by the Shandong Talent Development Group. With the theme of "Optical Science, Quantum Information, Semiconductors and Energy Devices," nearly 300 experts and scholars from home and abroad, including academicians and professors, attended the conference. More than 200,000 scholars from around the world watched the conference online.

The conference was hosted by Shandong Normal University Vice President Cai Yangjian, German Hanover University Chair Professor and President of the Chinese Physicists' Association Abroad Ding Fei, and Shanghai University of Engineering Science Distinguished Professor Zhan Qiwen.
Academician Pan Jianwei, executive vice president of the University of Science and Technology of China, sent a congratulatory letter to the conference, while Huang Wei, education counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Germany, delivered a video speech. Ling Wen and Feng Jikang made on-site speeches.
Pan Jianwei expressed in his congratulatory message that the cooperation between China and Germany in the field of physics has a long history, and this conference is a stage to showcase the academic achievements of physics in China and Germany. We should continue to strengthen cooperation and work together to face the challenges of future science, and also pay attention to the training and international exchanges of young scientific researchers. Huang Wei said in his speech that Chinese and German scientists have achieved remarkable results in many frontier areas such as quantum physics, materials science, and energy technology. He welcomed more German scholars to work with China to contribute their wisdom to solving global problems. Ling Wen said in his speech that Shandong Province is deeply implementing the strategy of innovation-driven development and pays great attention to the development of physics and interdisciplinary fields. He hopes that Chinese and German experts and scholars can exchange ideas deeply through this conference and tap into the potential for cooperation, further enhancing the scientific and technological level of the two countries. Feng Jikang said in his speech that the successful holding of this conference will undoubtedly promote the academic and humanistic exchanges between the physics communities of the two countries and lay a solid foundation for the high-quality development of the disciplines at Shandong Normal University.
During the plenary session, several well-known experts and scholars from both at home and abroad delivered excellent keynote speeches. Among them, Lu Zhaoyang, executive director of China University of Science and Technology Shanghai Institute and deputy director of Shanghai Quantum Science Center, introduced the latest progress of quantum computing technology; Oliver G. Schmidt, a member of the German Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the Leibniz Prize, introduced his latest research achievements in micro-mechanical robot field; Dong Shaoming, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, exchanged in-depth views on the research progress of silicate materials; Mike Somekh, a fellow of the UK Academy of Engineering, showed his research achievements in laser ultrasonic quantitative detection; Liu Xiuping, executive director of the National Natural Science Foundation Sino-German Science Center, shared the relevant situation of the Sino-German Science Center and the German Research Foundation; Klaus Richter, president of the German Physical Society, shared the development and international exchange of the German Physical Society through video link. The conference set up seven sub-forums, covering cutting-edge issues in quantum information and applications, optical field control and applications, micro-optics, ultrafast and ultra-strong laser technology and applications, laser materials and devices, and semiconductors and energy devices, inviting top experts and scholars to serve as special session chairs, and setting up rich report and discussion sessions, providing a broad academic exchange platform for participants. The talent development sub-forum also invited relevant leaders from the Shandong Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security to interpret the talent introduction and training policies of Shandong Province for experts and scholars.
This conference not only provided a broad platform for academic exchanges between Chinese and German experts and scholars, but also injected new vitality into promoting scientific and technological innovation and industrial upgrading in Shandong Province and even the whole country.
