About the School of Physics and Electronics

The School of Physics and Electronics is one of the earliest departments established by Shandong Normal University. At the beginning of the school's establishment, the department of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry was built, and meanwhile the physics division began to recruit students. The department of Physics was established separately in 1952, and the department of Physics of Qilu University was merged in the same year when the departments were adjusted. In December 2003, the department of Physics merged with the former institute of Semiconductors to form the School of Physics and Electronics. Over the years, generations of people in the School of Physics and Electronics have been keeping on moving to seek truth and working to be erudite, which forms excellent teaching style as well as prominent scientific and academic research. For instance, the college successfully demonstrated the "semiconductor nonlinear resistance" in 1960. In May of the same year, Chairman Mao Zedong visited the college's related scientific achievements. With the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy and "The Belt and Road " strategy, the college has made outstanding achievements in both teaching and scientific research. At present, the School of Physics and Electronics has become an important base for training high-quality physical and electronic talents that contribute a large number of high-level professional and technical talents for the country.
The college now has the department of Physics, the department of Electronics and the institute of Semiconductors. There are currently 4 undergraduate majors in physics, optoelectronic information science and engineering, electronic information engineering and electronic science and technology. Among them, the physics major is a national-level first-class undergraduate major, a national characteristic major, a Shandong Province brand major, and a Shandong Province key construction major; the electronic information engineering major is a national-level first-class undergraduate major, Shandong Province characteristic major; the optoelectronic information science and engineering major is a high-level applied major supported by the development of Shandong Province during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, and the electronic science and technology is the key specialty major of the school. In 2017, based on the original 2+2 double bachelor's degree joint training program, the physics major and the University of Waterloo in Canada directly recruited students for fresh high school graduates. Graduates who meet the requirements for degree-granting of the two schools can obtain the undergraduate diploma of our school and the bachelor's degree certificate of both schools. Physics was selected as a first-class discipline (cultivation) in Shandong Province in July 2018.
The college has a national-level physical virtual simulation experiment teaching center, Shandong Provincial Key Laboratory of Optics and Photonic Device, Shandong Province Key Laboratory of Medical Physics and Image Processing, Shandong Provincial Engineering and Technical Center of Light Manipulations, Shandong Province "Thirteenth Five-Year" Advanced Key Laboratory of Photoelectric Functional Materials and Device, and the physics experiment teaching center is the provincial experimental teaching demonstration center, etc. Atomic and molecular physics is the key discipline of Shandong Province, and the signal and information processing is the key disciplines of Shandong Province. 13 major courses including middle school physics teaching method, modern physics experiment, sensor principle and application, mechanics, heat, electromagnetics, optics, atomic physics, circuit analysis, analog circuit, digital circuit, high frequency circuit, digital signal processing, etc. are Shandong Provincial quality courses. The college has a post-doctoral research station in physics; a first-level discipline doctoral program in physics; a first-level discipline master program in physics, information and communication engineering, electronic science and technology, optical engineering; as well as curriculum and teaching theory (physics curriculum theory direction), Master of Education, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Science Technology and Education and other professional degree master programs. As a result, a complete undergraduate, master, doctor, and post-doctoral integrated talent training system has been formed.
The college currently has 144 faculty members, including 127 full-time teachers, 33 with senior titles or above, 51 with associate senior titles or above, and 19 doctoral supervisors. 66% of teachers have senior titles, and more than 50% of teachers have study experience abroad. The college has 1 double-appointed academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 national-level young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions, 2 national outstanding teachers, and 1 distinguished professor of "Taishan Scholar" in Shandong Province, 2 "Taishan Scholars" overseas distinguished professors, 3 "Taishan Scholars" young experts, 1 Shandong Province "Double Hundreds of Foreign Experts Program". Besides, more than 20 persons won the Shandong Province's young and middle-aged scientists with outstanding contributions, teaching master, excellent teacher and other honorary titles.
The college pays attention to undergraduate teaching and scientific research, and has made outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. Since 2010, the college has presided over 84 national-level projects such as National Natural Science Foundation of China (Major Program, General Program) and international cooperation projects, as well as 137 provincial and ministerial-level projects. More than 1,000 papers included SCI (EI) journals such as Nature Communications, Physical Review Letters, Optics Letters, Applied Physics Letters, Physical Review B have been published and more than 100 national invention patents have been obtained.
The college pays attention to academic exchanges and has cooperated with the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Mechanics, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nankai University, Nanjing University, Shandong University, Stanford University, New York University, University of North Carolina, University of Miami, Dalhousie University, Free University Amsterdam, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and other well-known universities and research institutes.
In recent years, the employment rate of undergraduate graduates of the School of Physics and Electronics has reached more than 95%. Meanwhile, many of the graduates have been sent to Peking University, Tsinghua University, Institute of Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other universities and research institutes for further study. In addition, the success rate of postgraduate entrance examination remains at around 40%. Graduates are employed in many industries such as government agencies and public institutions, state-owned enterprises, foreign-funded enterprises and other high-tech enterprises. Over the years, the college’s graduates have spread all over the world. They generally have a solid academic foundation, proactive and innovative ability, and a spirit of unity and cooperation that has won widespread reputation in the society, greatly improving the visibility of the School of Physics and Electronics, Shandong Normal University.
